Community Resources and Medical Information

Food Support

Pantries/Food Boxes

Food pantry in the old firehouse on the corner of S Bend Ave (803 Notre Dame Ave) - Tuesday 9-11, 2-4; Wednesday 2-4; Friday 2-4

Food Bank of Northern Indiana (702 Chapin St, South Bend, IN 46601) remains open with a limit of 5 shoppers at a time. Monday and Friday 9am-2pm, Wednesday 11am-5pm

La Casa de Amistad (746 S. Meade Street, South Bend, IN 46619) pantry remains open; Wednesday 2pm-4:45pm

Catholic Charities’ Food Pantry (1817 Miami Street, South Bend) is open every Wednesday from 10am-12noon and 5pm-7pm. In response to COVID19, the lobby will be closed. Food bags will be prepacked and handed off at the door to limit exposure and expedite services. More information is available at 574-234-3111.

KROC Center (900 W Western Ave, South Bend, IN 46601) food boxes will be available via drive-ups Mondays and Wednesdays, 10am-12pm. To receive food boxes, St. Joseph County residents need to bring an ID or green card.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society (520 Crescent Avenue, South Bend, IN 46617) is distributing boxes of food to families in need via drive through every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am – Noon, while supplies last. Those in need must bring a picture ID. Families can receive a box every 30 days. Visit the SVDP website for more details.

Meals on Wheels

REAL Services continues to provide Meals on Wheels services to those in need while taking special precautions. Clients receive one or two meals a day Monday through Friday (or any combination of days). For information about signing up for the Meals on Wheels program call 574-256-1649. Nutrition Sites are still serving meals by distributing take-home meals for clients. Clients cannot congregate at nutrition sites. More information about nutrition sites is available here.

Prepared Meals

St. Margaret’s House (117 N Lafayette Blvd, South Bend, IN 46601) will serve sack lunches from the parking lot Monday-Friday 12pm-1:30pm

HOPE Ministries (432 S Lafayette Blvd, South Bend, IN 46601) will continue serving lunch and dinner to anyone in need everyday. 

Keller Park Church (1003 W Bryan St. South Bend) will serve hot to-go meals to families with children. Breakfast items and sandwich fixings will also be provided for the family, and snack bags will also be given to all children 18 and under. Wednesdays dinner 5-6pm, Saturdays lunch 12-1pm, Sundays breakfast 10-11am

Wings Over South Bend (1124 E Angela Blvd #101, South Bend, IN 46617) is providing free kids meals to any child in grades K-12 Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Each meal includes two chicken tenders and a side of fries

Meals Provided by Schools

South Bend Community School Corporation will have grab & go meals for children under 18. Click here for information about locations and times.

Success Academy (3408 Ardmore Trail, South Bend, IN 46628) - Grab and Go Lunches will be served for all students under 18 years old on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11a.m. – 12 p.m. Enter the Academy through Door B.

School City Mishawaka will have packaged meals that can be picked up from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at the following schools:

  • Beiger, Emmons, LaSalle, and John Young Middle School 

  • Students who attend Hums Elementary School and Bethel University kindergarten can also pick up meals at any of these sites.

Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation

  • Free meals will continue to be offered Monday - Friday at three locations.

    • Early Meals will be offered at Prairie Vista & Grissom from 8 – 9 a.m.

    • Midday Meals will be offered at Prairie Vista, Grissom & Penn High School from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

    • Late Meals will be offered at Penn from 5 - 7 p.m. F

  • Students don’t have to be present with an adult to pick up the meals. The adult just has to be able to show that they have at least one P-H-M student that they are picking up food for. They can show a student ID card as proof.

John Glenn School Corporation

  • All meals will be free to students, preschool through 12th grade, and will be provided from 12 to 12:30 p.m. at North Liberty and Walkerton elementary schools. Meals will also be delivered at a number of bus stop locations. A full list of times and locations can be found here.

Career Academy

  • Grab-and-go lunches will be served at Success Academy for all students under 18 years old from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday and Thursdays. Families are asked to enter the building through Door B.

  • Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend

    • Our Lady of Hungary Parish and Marian High School are host sites for daily lunches. Families can receive grab-and-go meals from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. outside of the schools.

    • Anyone, regardless of income or school affiliation, under the age of 18 is eligible for this program.

    • Starting Thursday, Saint Joseph High School students, along with any of their school-aged siblings, can pick up free lunches at the school’s loading dock on Cedar Street from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

 

Medical Information

Follow-Up After an Assault

If you have experienced sexual assault, domestic violence, elder abuse, child abuse, and/or strangulation, St. Joseph Regional Medical Center’s Forensic Department is still providing follow-up medical care. Please access care through the Emergency Department entrance.

  • If you have questions about your options and rights in seeking medical care after an incident, you can speak with an SOS Advocate by calling 574-289-HELP(4357) 24/7.

Please note that St. Joseph Regional Medical Center and Memorial Hospital both have visitation restrictions at this time. Child Care Support

Many local childcare facilities will remain open until the CDC advises otherwise. The facilities will continue to take precautions and follow CDC Guidelines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Click here for a map of local facilities that have confirmed that they will remain open and are tentatively accepting new enrollments.

Housing and Utility Support

Utilities

  • The City of South Bend announced immediate suspension of all water shutoffs on Monday, March 16. 

  • American Electric Power (AEP) announced suspension of all electric shutoffs on Friday, March 13. 

  • NIPSCO announced suspension of all gas shutoffs on Friday, March 13. 

Evictions

  • Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb ordered on March 19 that evictions and foreclosures may not be initiated until Indiana’s state of emergency has terminated.

  • If an eviction or foreclosure is filed against you, complaints can be filed online by clicking here. A summary of tenants’ rights can be found in this handbook from Indiana Legal Services.

Other Financial Assistance

  • Township Trustees provide emergency assistance to individuals and families in need. This can include payment of rent, mortgage, or utilities, as well as burial or funeral costs. Individuals can find their township trustee’s contact information here and must call before visiting the office in person.  

  • Catholic Charities’ Resource & Referral Program provides limited financial assistance to help meet basic needs including utility assistance or rental assistance as well as material assistance based upon availability of resources. Assistance is provided by appointment only. The Assistance Line is available by calling 574-234-3111 ext. 60.
